Hong Kong’s vibrant arts scene is preparing to showcase a powerful message of inclusivity with the upcoming “No Limits” festival, featuring a groundbreaking dance collaboration titled Wayfaring Beyond. The performance, a co-production between the Hong Kong Dance Company (HKDance) and the China Hong Kong Para Dance Sport Association, is set to take the stage at Tai Kwun on and .
The project, rehearsed earlier this month, brings together dancers of varying abilities, including those who perform in wheelchairs, in a unique exploration of movement and spirit. A recent rehearsal offered a glimpse into the intense preparation, with dancers engaging in synchronized movements and introspective exercises, emphasizing connection and mutual understanding. Evina Wong Wai-king, a 65-year-old wheelchair dancer, was among those preparing for the performance.
“Beauty isn’t about how we execute difficult moves … but about those moments when we [dancers] immerse ourselves together in rehearsals, getting to know one another and paying full attention to each other’s bodies. These are the moments I find incredibly beautiful,” said Ong Tze-shen, choreographer of Wayfaring Beyond and HKDance principal dancer. This sentiment underscores the core philosophy of “No Limits” – to celebrate talent and creativity regardless of physical ability.
Launched in 2019, “No Limits” is co-presented by the Hong Kong Arts Festival and The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. The festival is dedicated to offering barrier-free performances and events, and promoting inclusivity through the arts. The 2026 edition, the eighth installment, will feature 11 groundbreaking works spanning music, theatre, dance, and film, alongside over 20 education and community programs.
This year’s “No Limits” theme, “All of Us, All Ways,” reflects a commitment to diversity and connection. The festival aims to inspire new perspectives and unlock the imaginative possibilities that come with embracing differences. The inclusion of collaborations with flagship Hong Kong performing arts companies like HKDance and the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra marks a significant step towards integrating inclusivity into the mainstream cultural landscape.
Wayfaring Beyond draws inspiration from the work of Zhuangzi, an ancient Chinese philosopher who questioned conventional notions of perfection and imperfection. The performance seeks to guide audiences towards a deeper understanding of themselves and each other, transcending the limitations of the physical body. The choreography blends traditional Chinese dance with wheelchair dance sport and martial arts, showcasing a state of spiritual and physical freedom.
The performance will be held at the Parade Ground in Tai Kwun, and admission is free. Alongside Wayfaring Beyond, the “No Limits” festival will also present other works including “Light and Shadow on Strings” by the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, “Sleeping Fires – Two Blind Women in the Snowy Tokugawa Nights” by Kuro Tanino, and “A Space in Time” by Riccardo Servini and Nick Taussig. The festival’s full program includes accessible in-venue performances, free film screenings, and a symposium.
The festival’s commitment extends beyond performances, with a robust series of education and community programs designed for young people and the public. These initiatives aim to foster greater understanding, creativity, and connection across communities. The Jockey Club “No Limits” Education and Community Programmes include school tours, workshops, and public showcases.
“No Limits” 2026 represents a significant moment for inclusive arts in Hong Kong, demonstrating a growing recognition of the importance of accessibility and diversity in the cultural sector. By showcasing the talents of artists of varying abilities, the festival challenges conventional perceptions and celebrates the richness of human expression. The festival’s organizers hope to highlight the importance of inclusion in all areas of life, and to inspire audiences to reimagine the value of diversity.
