Davao City, Philippines – As anticipation builds for the vibrant Kadayawan Festival 2025, organizers are issuing a crucial reminder to all participating contingents: cultural sensitivity is paramount. The Festival Executive Committee, through Oscar Casaysay, head of Davao City culture and the Arts, has strongly encouraged performers to seek guidance from tribal leaders to ensure authentic and respectful representations of the city’s diverse cultural heritage.
Understanding the Importance of Tribal Consultation
The Kadayawan Festival is a celebration of Davao City’s rich tapestry of cultures, with a particular focus on it’s indigenous communities. For performers aiming to showcase any of the 11 cultural tribes that call Davao City home, direct consultation with their respective deputy mayors or tribal leaders is not just recommended, but essential.
“where there are focus, they realy have to sit down with deputy mayors,” Casaysay stated during the Kadayawan 2025 Festival media launch. This proactive approach aims to prevent misrepresentations and ensure that performances honor, rather than inadvertently disrespect, the traditions and customs of the indigenous peoples.
When Consultation is key
The directive specifically applies to performances that intend to highlight any of the 11 cultural tribes. If a performance does not feature any specific cultural community, the need to seek permits from deputy mayors is waived. However, the underlying principle of cultural sensitivity remains.
Avoiding Cultural Missteps: lessons from the Past
Past festivals have seen instances where performances, despite good intentions, have drawn criticism for cultural insensitivity.A notable example occurred in 2019 when the winning group in the open category, Sindac Anib Performing Ensemble from Bislig, Surigao del Sur, faced backlash for their portrayal of the Manobo tribe. Their performance, which included topless performers in beaded G-strings, was deemed “disrespectful” by some, highlighting the fine line between artistic interpretation and cultural appropriation.
While the Kadayawan Festival encourages creative freedom in contest pieces – allowing for interpretations of folklore, fables, tales, legends, or adaptations in dance, drama, and live music – it is indeed unequivocally emphasized that all presentations must be culture-sensitive. This means performers must be mindful of how they depict conventional attire, rituals, and beliefs.
