Man Dies After Alcohol-Fueled Assault: Family Pays Tribute to “Gentle Soul”

Paul Rowlands, a father, son, and grandfather, tragically died from a brain haemorrhage following an assault in July of last year. A man has now been held accountable for his death following a thorough inquiry by police and the Public Prosecution Service. Details of the Fatal Attack
The incident occurred on Sunday, July 17th, following an altercation between Mr. Rowlands and another man. Witnesses reported seeing both individuals consuming alcohol and arguing in the area prior to the attack.
Detective Inspector Nicola Dean, leading the investigation, stated: “A number of witnesses…described both consuming alcohol and arguing.” She further explained that one witness provided a direct account of the assault, detailing how the defendant attacked Mr. Rowlands while he was vulnerable on the ground.
Mr.Rowlands sustained notable injuries, including heavy bruising to his ear and a laceration to his head. A post-mortem examination tragically confirmed the cause of death as a brain haemorrhage resulting from blunt impact trauma.
“This was the most senseless and tragic loss of a man’s life, in an attack fuelled by alcohol,” DI Dean added. “Here,a verbal altercation followed by physical blows has had the most devastating and irreversible of consequences.”
Justice Served, But Heartache Remains
Following a comprehensive investigation, the defendant has been held accountable for his actions. DI Dean emphasized the collaborative effort with the Public Prosecution Service in securing this outcome.
Though, the focus remains on the immense grief experienced by Mr. rowlands’ family. “At the same time, Paul’s family have suffered unimaginably and I’m deeply aware that their heartache goes on,” DI Dean said. “my thoughts, and that of my team, remain with them.”
A Family’s Heartfelt Tribute
Mr. Rowlands’ daughter, Leanne Rowlands, shared a poignant statement on behalf of the family, painting a picture of a beloved man at the heart of a close-knit family.
“Dad was at the heart of our big family,” Leanne stated. “He was a father, son, brother, uncle and grandfather – and he was loved by us all, more than I can say.”
She described her father as a devoted son to his parents,June and Tony,and a “brilliant dad” to herself and her siblings,Lucy,Ria,Laura,and Ryan. “Dad was our rock, and his cruel and untimely death has turned our worlds upside down. Our lives will never be the same again.”
A Grandfather Lost Too Soon
The tragedy is compounded by the fact that Mr. Rowlands will never meet his two youngest grandchildren. His granddaughter was just 10 months old at the time of his death, and a new grandson has as been born.
“They’ll never have the joy of knowing their grandad and, beleive me, he would simply have adored and spoilt them both,” Leanne shared, her words filled with sorrow.
Remembering Paul’s Warmth and Humor
The family fondly remembers Paul’s quiet warmth and brilliant sense of humor.While reserved with those outside the family,he was a source of fun and laughter within it.
“He loved Doctor Who and Man United,and we all remember his sweet tooth!” Leanne recalled with a touch of fondness. “He always had a little stash of chocolates down the side of the sofa, supposedly just for him but he would always share them with us kids.”
He was a loving uncle and nephew, always prioritizing his family. The past three years have been incredibly challenging, and while the sentencing brings a degree of closure, the family acknowledges the long road of grief ahead.”Nothing will bring this gentle soul back,” Leanne said.
