A new era for Indian sports is beginning with the launch of the country’s first professional basketball league. ACG Sports Private Limited and the Basketball Federation of India (BFI) are partnering to create the professional basketball league, which aims to transform basketball into a mainstream sport.
The league will feature both 5×5 and 3×3 formats for men and women, creating a professional environment for athletes across India. The India basketball initiative seeks to provide a viable career path for aspiring players, with a focus on infrastructure, athlete progress, and community engagement.
ACG Sports Pvt. Ltd., a subsidiary of ACG, will manage the competition. ACG has been involved in grassroots basketball for a decade, reflecting its commitment to social enhancement. Jeremy Loeliger, former CEO of Australia’s National basketball League (NBL), will serve as director of ACG Sports, guiding the league’s strategy and operations.
Karan Singh, managing director of ACG, said, “Basketball represents more then just a sport – it is a vehicle for building character, leadership, and possibility… Our vision for this basketball league is to establish a self-sustaining ecosystem where every child with passion and talent can see a viable future in basketball in India.”
ACG will also open a residential high-performance facility this year, offering training programs for players, coaches, and officials. The facility will focus on nutrition, emotional well-being, and academic balance.
Aadhav Arjuna, president of the Basketball Federation of India, said, “This partnership with ACG is unlike anything we’ve seen before… We’re building not just visibility, but real momentum and global credibility. Our vision is to win medals at the Asian Games and Olympics.”
Kulvinder Singh Gill, secretary general of the Basketball federation of India, said, “This league will unlock new opportunities for young Indian talent to grow, compete professionally, and gain invaluable exposure alongside international players and coaches.”
The League Council will soon take over standards and operations. Nationwide scouting, athlete development programs, and fan engagement initiatives are also planned.
What’s next
The league’s structure, competition formats, and player eligibility rules are being finalized with input from international experts. The coming months will see the implementation of scouting programs and fan engagement initiatives to build a sustainable basketball culture in India.
