India and Canada are actively working to rebuild their economic and diplomatic relationship following a period of significant strain. The thaw, initiated earlier in 2025 with a change in Canadian leadership, has gained momentum through high-level meetings and a commitment to renewed cooperation, particularly in trade, and investment.

The relationship between the two nations deteriorated sharply in 2023 when then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau publicly accused India of involvement in the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Sikh separatist leader, on Canadian soil. India vehemently denied the allegations. This led to reciprocal expulsions of diplomats and the suspension of visa services, effectively freezing much of the bilateral engagement.

However, a shift began to materialize with the appointment of Mark Carney as Canadian Prime Minister in 2025. Carney and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting in June 2025 on the sidelines of the G7 summit held in Canada. This initial engagement paved the way for further dialogue and the subsequent appointment of new high commissioners to both countries in August 2025.

The most recent and significant step in the restoration of ties came with a visit to India by Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand in October 2025. Anand met with her Indian counterpart, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, and Prime Minister Modi. Modi expressed his belief that Anand’s visit would strengthen “efforts to impart new momentum” to the two countries’ partnership, according to reports.

Following the meetings in Delhi, both sides announced a series of measures designed to revitalize the relationship. A key component of this effort is the initiation of ministerial-level discussions focused on bilateral trade and investment. This signals a desire to move beyond the diplomatic impasse and explore concrete economic opportunities.

A joint statement released after the meetings highlighted the potential benefits of a strengthened partnership, noting that reviving this partnership will not only create opportunities for enhanced economic cooperation but also help mitigate vulnerabilities arising from shifting global alliances. This suggests a recognition of the broader geopolitical context and the importance of diversifying economic relationships.

The timing of this rapprochement is noteworthy. Global economic uncertainties and shifting alliances are prompting nations to reassess their strategic partnerships. For Canada, with a significant diaspora of Indian origin – nearly 1.7 million people – maintaining a strong relationship with India is both economically and politically important. The developments were being watched anxiously in both countries, according to the BBC.

Minister Anand and Jaishankar have also met on multiple occasions this year, including at the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in the Niagara Region in November 2025 and on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session in New York in September 2025. These frequent interactions underscore the commitment from both sides to maintain the positive momentum.

The renewed focus on trade and investment is particularly significant. While specific details of the ministerial-level discussions have not yet been released, the move suggests a willingness to address potential barriers to commerce and explore new avenues for collaboration. This could include discussions on reducing tariffs, streamlining regulatory processes, and promoting joint ventures.

The restoration of diplomatic ties also has implications for other areas of cooperation, such as education, research, and cultural exchange. These initiatives can foster greater understanding and strengthen people-to-people connections, laying the foundation for a more sustainable and resilient relationship.

While the recent developments represent a positive step forward, challenges remain. The underlying issues that led to the initial deterioration of relations have not been fully resolved. Continued dialogue and a commitment to transparency will be crucial to building trust and ensuring a stable and productive partnership in the long term. The situation will continue to be monitored closely by businesses and investors with interests in both countries.

As of February 2026, Minister Anand was recently seen with Minister Jaishankar, as reported on Facebook, indicating continued engagement at the highest levels.
