India Eyes Local Production of Israeli Rampage Missile, Bolstering Strategic Independence
New Delhi is moving forward with plans to domestically manufacture the Rampage long-range missile, acquired from israel, under the enterprising “Make in India” initiative. This strategic shift aims to not only enhance india’s defense capabilities but also to secure a reliable supply chain and lessen its reliance on foreign arms imports.
The Rampage, officially designated as the High Speed Low Drag-Mark 2 within the Indian military, first entered service with the Indian Army in 2020, following heightened tensions with China after the clashes in Galwan Valley. It quickly became a vital component of India’s long-range strike arsenal, offering a crucial capability to engage targets at significant distances.
The missile’s combat debut occurred during operation Sindoor on May 10, 2025, a demonstration of its operational effectiveness.Indian Air Force (IAF) Jaguar and Su-30MKI aircraft successfully deployed the Rampage against targets including Pakistan’s Sukkur airbase, as well as sites at Bahalwanpur and Muridke. Reports from the operation highlight the missile’s precision and battlefield utility, particularly its ability to strike deep within enemy territory while minimizing exposure to advanced air defense systems.
This move towards local production is driven by several factors. Beyond the economic benefits of the “Make in India“ program – fostering domestic industry and creating jobs – it addresses critical security concerns. Establishing indigenous manufacturing ensures a consistent and uninterrupted supply of this key weapon system, particularly vital given the volatile geopolitical landscape in the region.
