The recent exchange between Israeli Ambassador Naor Gilon and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has ignited a political storm in India, highlighting growing concerns over the country’s perceived silence on the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The controversy stems from Vadra’s strong criticism of Israel’s military actions, which she labelled as “genocide,” and the subsequent retort from the Israeli envoy.
Vadra Accuses Israel of ‘Genocide,’ Cites Civilian Casualties
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has been a vocal critic of Israel’s response to the Hamas attacks, consistently raising concerns about the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza. In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Vadra accused Israel of committing genocide, alleging the deaths of over 60,000 Palestinians, including 18,430 children.
She further stated that Israel had ”starved hundreds to death including many children and is threatening to starve millions,” accusing the Indian government of “shameful” silence in the face of this devastation. Vadra’s statement reflects a growing sentiment among some Indian political figures and civil society groups who believe India should take a stronger stance against the violence in Gaza.
Envoy’s Sharp Response and Claims of Hamas Duty
Ambassador Gilon responded directly to Vadra, dismissing her accusations as “shameful deceit.” He countered her claims by stating that Israel had killed “25,000 Hamas terrorists” and argued that civilian casualties were a result of Hamas deliberately “hiding behind civilians.”
Gilon further asserted that Hamas prevents aid from reaching the population, contributing to the humanitarian crisis. He claimed that Israel has facilitated the entry of 2 million tonnes of food into Gaza, while hamas “tries to sequestrate them, thereby creating hunger.” He dismissed accusations of genocide, pointing to Gaza’s population growth over the last 50 years as evidence against such claims, and urged people not to “buy Hamas numbers.”
political Fallout and Calls for MEA Intervention
The public exchange has drawn criticism from other political leaders. Shiv sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi voiced her concern over the Israeli envoy’s tone, stating it was “unacceptable” for foreign diplomats to address Indian parliamentarians in such a manner within India. She urged the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to reprimand the envoy.
Chaturvedi also referenced a previous incident involving a former Polish Ambassador and her own decision not to pursue a privilege motion after a discussion with the External Affairs Minister, suggesting this recent interaction felt like an emboldening of such behavior.
India’s Historical Position and Current Balancing Act
India has historically maintained a consistent position of support for the palestinian cause. It formally recognised the State of Palestine in 1988 and continues to advocate for a two-state solution. however, India has also strengthened its strategic partnership with Israel in recent years, notably in areas of defence and technology.
This has led to a delicate balancing act for the Indian government, navigating its historical commitments to Palestine while concurrently fostering closer ties with Israel. The current situation in gaza is testing this balance, with increasing pressure from various quarters to articulate a clearer and more critical stance on Israel’s actions.
Condemnation of Journalist Killings and Media Freedom Concerns
Beyond the direct exchange, Vadra also condemned the killing of Al Jazeera journalists in israeli air strikes, praising their courage in upholding journalistic integrity. She highlighted the importance of self-reliant media in a world increasingly dominated by power and commercial interests. this underscores broader concerns about media freedom and the safety of journalists covering the conflict.
