Background to teh Dispute
China has lodged a protest against the recently released Bollywood film “Battle of Galvan,” starring Salman Khan, which dramatizes the 2020 India-China military clash in the Galwan Valley. Chinese state media alleges the film distorts the facts surrounding the incident.India has responded by affirming its commitment to freedom of expression, stating filmmakers have the right to create works based on their interpretation of events.
The Galwan Valley Clash
The film is based on the June 15, 2020, military standoff between Indian and Chinese forces in the Galwan Valley, a disputed area in eastern Ladakh. Salman Khan portrays Colonel Bikumalla Santhosh Babu, the commanding officer of the 16 Bihar Regiment, who was killed during the encounter with the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).
India officially acknowledged losing 20 soldiers in the hand-to-hand combat. While China initially denied any casualties, it later admitted to four deaths. However, reports from the United States suggest China’s losses exceeded 40 soldiers.
Conflicting narratives and Film Criticism
An article published by China’s state-run Global Times criticized the film, claiming its depiction of the June 2020 encounter deviates from the actual events. The article asserts that Bollywood films prioritize entertainment and emotional impact over historical accuracy and that cinematic embellishment cannot alter historical facts or undermine the PLA’s commitment to defending Chinese territory. The Global Times also incorrectly asserts that the Galwan Valley falls on the Chinese side of the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
Indian government sources have clarified that the government played no role in the film’s production and suggested that anyone with doubts about the film’s accuracy can consult the Indian Ministry of Defense for clarification. The clash in Galwan Valley led to a significant escalation of tensions between India and China.
