Japan Stuns South Korea to claim Asian Women’s Handball Championship Title
New Delhi, India – In a thrilling upset, Japan dethroned seven-time defending champions South Korea to win the asian Women’s Handball Championship 2024. The gripping final, held at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Arena, saw japan overcome a 12-9 deficit to clinch a 25-24 victory and secure their second continental title.
The championship,which saw eight teams compete,marked the first time India hosted the prestigious tournament.While the host nation fell short of their medal aspirations,finishing sixth after a 41-30 loss to China in the 5th/6th playoff,they gained valuable experience playing in front of a home crowd.
“This was the first time India has hosted the event,” said Menika, a member of the Indian women’s handball team. “Our experience playing in front of our fans was very good. But, our target was a medal this time and in terms of those expectations, we fell short.We’ll learn from our mistakes and we’re looking forward to the next opportunity.”
India’s campaign showcased the talents of young players like Bhawana Sharma and the steady presence of experienced goalkeeper Nina Shil.
Kazakhstan secured their second-ever bronze medal,defeating Iran 28-22 in the third-place playoff. Hong Kong China finished seventh after a 33-18 victory over Singapore.
The Asian Women’s Handball Championship 2024, the 20th edition of the tournament, saw Japan, South Korea, Kazakhstan, and Iran qualify for the IHF World Women’s Handball Championship 2025, to be held in Germany and the Netherlands. South Korea remains the most successful team in the competition’s history, boasting 16 titles.
