Squad Announcement and Key Changes
India has made a significant change to its plans for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, leaving out vice-captain Shubman Gill from the 15-man squad. This decision, announced on May 15, 2024, marks a departure from recent team compositions and indicates a focus on current form and adaptability for the tournament, which will be co-hosted by India and bangladesh.
The selection committee opted to include wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan, who recently demonstrated remarkable form in the syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, scoring 517 runs at a strike rate of 193.34. This performance propelled him into the top order, creating space for Rinku singh,a dynamic middle-order batsman who hasn’t consistently featured in recent T20I squads. Consequently, Jitesh Sharma, the established No. 1 wicketkeeper in recent series, was omitted from the squad.
Axar Patel Appointed Vice-Captain
With Gill’s exclusion, the All-India senior Selection Committee named Axar Patel as the vice-captain. Patel’s appointment reflects his growing leadership qualities and consistent performance as a spin-bowling all-rounder. He brings valuable experience to the team, having played 97 T20 matches and taken 96 wickets.
Bowling and All-Rounder Composition
The bowling attack features a strong core of pace bowlers, including Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and Harshit Rana. Two of these bowlers are expected to form the core of the pace attack in the playing XI.
