Seeking Common Ground Amidst Tariffs
Indian Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, embarked on a series of meetings with key U.S. lawmakers on Friday, August 22, 2025, to discuss “mutually beneficial trade engagement” and “energy security” as tensions rise over recently imposed tariffs. The diplomatic effort underscores India’s commitment to maintaining a strong relationship with the U.S. despite growing economic friction.
Engaging with Key Legislators
Ambassador Kwatra met with Senator Bill Hagerty, expressing gratitude for the Senator’s consistent support of the India-U.S. partnership.Discussions centered on ongoing bilateral talks aimed at achieving a “fair, balanced, and mutually beneficial trade engagement.” He also shared perspectives on India’s energy security needs and the increasing trade volume between the two nations in hydrocarbons.
The Ambassador continued his outreach, holding “productive conversations” with Congressman Greg Landsman, focusing on developments in bilateral trade and energy cooperation. Earlier in the week, on Thursday, Kwatra engaged with Representative Josh Gottheimer, Ranking Member of the National Security Agency & Cyber Subcommittee, House Intelligence Committee, to discuss ”two-way trade in oil and gas” and the importance of “mutually beneficial trade ties.”
Since August 9th, Ambassador Kwatra has met with a total of 16 U.S. lawmakers, signaling a concentrated effort to address concerns and reinforce the strategic importance of the India-U.S. relationship.
The Tariff Dispute and India’s Position
These meetings take place against a backdrop of escalating trade tensions. Former U.S. President Donald Trump imposed tariffs totaling 50 percent on India, including a 25 percent tariff on New Delhi’s purchases of Russian oil, set to take effect on August 27th.This move has strained relations between the two countries.
India has consistently defended its decision to purchase Russian crude oil, citing national interest and market dynamics as key drivers. Following Russia’s invasion of ukraine in february 2022,Western sanctions led to a decline in Russian oil supplies, creating an chance for India to secure discounted energy resources.
