Germany will host the Indian Film Festival Germany 2025 from January 10 to 12, marking the first edition of what organizers describe as the biggest non-commercial Indian film festival ever held outside India. The festival, a joint initiative by the Embassy of India in Berlin and The Tagore Centre (ICCR, Berlin), will feature more than 40 screenings across Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt, and Munich, with a focus on showcasing Indian cinema as a cultural bridge between the two nations.
The official opening film will be Boman Irani’s directorial debut, The Mehta Boys, which will premiere at the red-carpet gala in Berlin. Other headliners include the National Award-winning film Gulmohar and the Manoj Bajpayee-starrer Despatch. The festival will also include exclusive premieres, interactive Q&A sessions with filmmakers and actors, and simultaneous screenings and panel discussions in the four host cities.
According to Ajit Gupte, Ambassador of India to Germany, the festival aims to reflect India’s evolving cinematic tradition and foster deeper cultural and economic ties between India and Germany. He emphasized that Indian cinema has become a global phenomenon, serving as a universal medium for connecting hearts and minds across borders.
The venues will include state-of-the-art facilities such as CinemaxX’s Potsdamer Platz cinema in Berlin, which serves as the main venue for premieres and is regularly used for international film festivals. Screenings will also take place in Hamburg, Frankfurt, and Munich, expanding the festival’s reach beyond the capital.
Organizers highlighted the significance of the event for the Indian diaspora in Germany, noting that opportunities to experience Indian cinema on the big screen have historically been limited. By bringing together Indian and German cinephiles, the festival seeks to create a shared space for cultural exchange through storytelling.
The Indian Film Festival Germany 2025 builds on previous cultural collaborations, such as the Namaste Berlin festival held in 2023, where Manoj Bajpayee and director Rahul V Chittella participated in post-screening discussions for Gulmohar. This year’s edition marks a formal expansion of such efforts into a multi-city, high-profile event backed by diplomatic and cultural institutions.
