Indian Student Shot Dead While Working as Security Guard in Edmonton
Edmonton, Alberta – A 20-year-old Indian Sikh student, harshandeep Singh, was tragically shot and killed early Friday morning while working as a security guard at an apartment building in Edmonton, Canada.
The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. at a building located on 107th Avenue. Police responded to reports of gunshots and found Singh unresponsive in a stairwell. He was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday.
Two suspects, 30-year-old Evan Rain and 30-year-old Judith Saulteaux, were arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Singh’s death. A weapon was recovered from their possession during the arrest.
Disturbing video footage of the incident, which has since gone viral on social media, shows a harrowing scene. the video appears to depict one member of a three-person group pushing Singh down a flight of stairs before shooting him from behind.
“On Friday, December 6, at approximately 12:30 a.m.,patrol officers responded to a report of a gunshot inside an apartment building in the area of 106 Street and 107 Avenue,” Edmonton police said in a statement. “Upon arrival, officers located an unresponsive 20-year-old male security guard Harshandeep Singh in a stairwell and immediately conducted first aid. EMS (Emergency medical Services) responded, treated and transported him to hospital where he was declared deceased (sic).”
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear as the investigation continues.
