Indian Table Tennis Team Defeated by USA in Opening Match: Highlights & Analysis
India lost 8-3 to the United States in their first Group 1 match at the ITTF Mixed Team World Cup 2024 in Chengdu, China. The Indian team is young, with experienced players like Manika Batra and Sharath Kamal not participating.
In the opening mixed doubles match, India’s Snehit Suravajjula and Poymantee Baisya lost 2-1 to USA’s Naresh Nandan and Ke Tiffany. Yashaswini Ghorpade and Jeet Chandra also lost their singles matches, both by a 2-1 score. Ghorpade, ranked 88th, fell to 186th-ranked Sally Moyland. Chandra, ranked 312th, lost to 465th-ranked Xiangjing Zhang.
In men’s doubles, Suravajjula and Chandra lost 2-0 to cap a tough day for the Indian team. Each rubber consists of three games, and the first team to win eight games wins the overall match.
India is grouped with top seeds China, Australia, and the USA. The top two teams after round-robin matches will advance to the next stage. India will face China next.
The ITTF Mixed Team World Cup is in its second edition, following last year’s inaugural tournament in Chengdu, where China won and India did not progress past the first stage.
