The Indiana basketball program is scheduled to host Notre Dame transfer guard Markus Burton for an official visit from April 12 to April 14, 2026. According to reports from Jeff Rabjohns of 247Sports and Joe Tipton of On3, the visit will take place from Sunday to Tuesday.

Burton has arranged a pair of visits, which include a trip to Houston in addition to the scheduled visit to Indiana. The transfer portal opened on April 7, 2026, though an NCAA recruiting dead period prevented visits from beginning until April 10, 2026.

The recruitment of Burton comes as second-year coach Darian DeVries and executive director of basketball Ryan Carr work to rebuild the Indiana roster for the 2026-27 season. Currently, only one player has been confirmed to return to the program.

Player Background and High School Career

Burton is a 6-foot, 190-pound guard and a native of Mishawaka, Indiana. He played high school basketball at Penn High School, where he was named the 2023 Indiana Mr. Basketball. During his high school career, he became the No. 20 all-time leading scorer in the state of Indiana.

Despite his scoring productivity, including an average of 30.3 points per game and 42.5% 3-point shooting during his senior year, Burton was a three-star prospect. 247Sports ranked him No. 153 overall and No. 6 in the state of Indiana. Notre Dame was the only Power Five program to offer him a scholarship.

Collegiate Performance at Notre Dame

Burton spent three seasons with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish under head coach Micah Shrewsberry. Over 69 career games, he averaged 19.1 points, 3.8 assists, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.8 steals while playing 33.2 minutes per game. He made 68 starts during his tenure in South Bend.

Collegiate Performance at Notre Dame

As a freshman during the 2023-24 season, Burton averaged 17.5 points per game, which ranked as the third-highest average among Division I freshmen in the country. His performance earned him the ACC Rookie of the Year award and a spot on the All-ACC third team.

Burton’s production increased during his sophomore season in 2024-25. He averaged 21.3 points, 3.6 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.7 steals per game. In conference play, he averaged 23.5 points per game, leading the ACC in scoring. These efforts resulted in an Associated Press All-ACC first team selection and a second-team All-ACC honor.

During the 2024-25 season, Burton shot 44.2% from the field (194-for-439), 37.5% from 3-point range (48-for-128), and 84.8% from the free throw line (117-for-138). His career shooting percentages at Notre Dame stand at 43.8% from the field, 33.2% from 3-point range, and 84.7% from the free throw line.

Based on his performance, Burton was named to the Bob Cousy Award, Wooden Award, and Naismith Trophy watch lists for the 2025-26 season.

Injury and Eligibility Status

Burton’s 2025-26 season was significantly impacted by a foot injury, which limited him to only 10 games. Because of this limited participation, he is likely to have two seasons of collegiate eligibility remaining.

The transfer follows a period of limited team success for Notre Dame, which has finished with a losing record in each of the last three seasons.
