Departing Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy has indicated that it may be some time before we see a new Indiana Jones film. She said: “I don’t think anyone is interested in exploring that further at this point.”
It has been two and a half years as Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which was panned by critics, was released, and Lucasfilm has not indicated that a sequel is in the works.
In an interview with Deadline, in which she confirmed her departure from Lucasfilm after 14 years, Kennedy stood behind Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. In that film, Harrison Ford returned to his role as the beloved archaeologist with the whip. According to Kennedy, the main reason Lucasfilm went ahead with the film was that Ford himself really wanted to play it one more time.
“I don’t regret that, because Harrison wanted this more than anything,” she said. “He didn’t want Indy to end with the fourth film. He wanted another chance at a new film, and we gave him that.I think that was the right thing to do. He wanted to make that film.”
“I don’t think Indy will ever really be gone, but I don’t think anyone is interested in continuing with it at the moment,” Kennedy confirmed. “But these are timeless films, and Indy will never be gone.”
