A collaboration between a Victorian farmer and a First Nations artist has moved from an isolated farmhouse to the catwalk of the Melbourne Fashion Festival, showcasing designs that blend traditional Indigenous art with advanced textile technology.

The partnership between farmer Sue McClure and Warrnambool-based artist Sherry Johnstone, a Keerray Woorroong and Yorta Yorta woman, resulted in a series of nature-inspired designs that recently appeared at one of Australia’s premier fashion events.

Origins of the Collaboration

The project began in late 2023 when Sue McClure, who operates a farm in Pigeon Ponds in far-western Victoria, began experimenting with knitting scarves and blankets. McClure initially attempted to use Indigenous art designs she discovered on the internet, but she later stated she didn’t feel right about it.

Seeking an ethical and authentic approach, McClure contacted Sherry Johnstone. The two women discovered a shared commitment to the environment and the preservation of the land.

We had a passion for the land and being mindful of our footprint on our environment as such, and caring for country,

Sherry Johnstone

This shared philosophy formed the basis of an organic partnership, starting with the creation of blankets and scarves featuring Johnstone’s artwork.

Material and Technical Process

The production of the garments involves a global supply chain and specific technical expertise. The duo utilizes fine merino wool farmed in Tasmania. This wool is transported to Italy for processing before being returned to Australia for the final creation of the pieces.

The final designs are brought to life using Japanese knitting technology, allowing the intricate Indigenous patterns to be translated into high-fashion textiles.

From Competition to Catwalk

The partnership’s first major milestone occurred in 2025, when the pair created a blanket shape that was developed into an outfit. This piece was submitted by Johnstone to the National Wool Museum Future in Fibres competition.

Following the competition, the designs gained further visibility at the Melbourne Fashion Festival. McClure praised the artistic contribution of her collaborator, noting, She’s a beautiful artist and she does amazing stuff,

The resulting collection, which draws heavy inspiration from nature, represents a fusion of agricultural production, Indigenous cultural expression, and international textile processing.
