Airline Invests in Advanced Training Programs
IndiGo, India’s largest airline, is upgrading its pilot training programs to improve competencies, particularly situational awareness, according to a senior airline official. This initiative comes as IndiGo expands its fleet and anticipates important growth in its pilot workforce.
Currently operating over 2,300 daily flights with a fleet exceeding 400 aircraft and over 900 planes on order, IndiGo employs more than 5,300 pilots.The airline projects this number will double to over 10,600 by 2030.
Transitioning from CBTA to EBT
IndiGo currently utilizes competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBTA).The airline’s goal is to evolve towards Evidence-Based Training (EBT), a more advanced methodology. “When you become CBTA-compliant, you eventually end up, once you mature, you become EBT-compliant,” the official told the press Trust of India (PTI) as reported by the Economic Times.
The transition to EBT will be data-driven, leveraging the airline’s extensive operational data. The official explained that the airline will “first of all collect all the data, validate all the data…then base the training program on the data.”
Data Analytics and AI to Enhance Training
Key elements of the competency-based training programs include enhancing skills in situational awareness, decision-making, and corporate resource management.IndiGo plans to utilize data analytics and artificial intelligence to refine these programs and ensure thay are based on real-world performance data.
The airline anticipates the full implementation of EBT will take approximately one to one-and-a-half years.
