Fifteen Nations Mobilize for Super Garuda Shield

Indonesia and the United States have launched annual joint military exercises involving 15 nations.

The Indonesian Army and the U.S. Army wrapped up a 15-day joint combat exercise. It forms part of the broader Super Garuda Shield series, slated to be Indonesia’s biggest defense exercise.

A Rare Intercontinental Missile Test in International Waters

China recently conducted a rare test launch of a submarine-launched ballistic missile into the Pacific Ocean.

The People’s Liberation Army Navy submarine fired the missile carrying a dummy warhead into international waters at 12:01 p.m. on a Monday, according to the official Xinhua News Agency.

Beijing Defends the Launch as Routine

Chinese defense ministry spokesperson Chen Xi stated in a late Tuesday statement that the test launch achieved its intended targets. He added that neighboring countries were notified in advance and that Beijing maintains its nuclear forces at the minimum level required for national security.

However, the move has drawn sharp criticism from regional powers.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong described the launch as destabilizing. New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters warned that it signals a recurring pattern from Beijing.

Allies Accelerate Regional Defense Integration

Analysts suggest that Beijing’s ongoing military modernization and assertive naval actions will likely accelerate defense integration among U.S. allies and partners.

Ely Ratner, former U.S. assistant secretary of defense for Indo-Pacific security affairs, noted that this assertiveness should drive U.S. allies in Asia closer together.

Similarly, Eurasia Group senior analyst Jeremy Chan observed that the test launch will likely fuel concerns and foster greater cooperation in joint training, arms sales, and defense spending among countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and the Philippines.
