Vietnamese Leaders Welcome Indonesian President-elect Prabowo Subianto

On September 14, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man received Indonesian President-elect Prabowo Subianto, who is visiting and working in Vietnam. The visit marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Strategic Partnership between the two countries, ahead of the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

Receiving the President-elect of Indonesia, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh congratulated Indonesia on its remarkable achievements, becoming the largest economy in Southeast Asia and the 16th in the world, with social security guaranteed. The Indonesian President-elect expressed his admiration for the indomitable and resilient spirit of the Vietnamese people in the struggle for national independence as well as in building and developing the country.

Deepening Strategic Partnership

The two leaders assessed that over the past nearly seven decades, the bilateral relationship founded by President Ho Chi Minh and President Sukarno has developed strongly and extensively. They agreed on a number of major orientations to effectively exploit cooperation potential, develop the Strategic Partnership increasingly deeply and substantially, and soon bring the bilateral relationship to a new height.

Key Areas of Cooperation

The two sides agreed to increase delegation exchanges and effectively implement bilateral cooperation mechanisms to enhance trust and contribute to removing difficulties. They also agreed to promote cooperation in food security, energy security, and high technology, and to facilitate trade promotion and access to each other’s commodity markets, including agricultural products and Halal products.

Regional and International Cooperation

The two leaders discussed regional and international situations of mutual concern and agreed to strengthen cooperation, consolidate solidarity, central role and common views of ASEAN on regional security, including the East Sea issue. They also agreed to strengthen coordination in all fields to contribute to maintaining peace, stability and security in the region and the world.

Legislative Cooperation

National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man proposed that the two sides coordinate to prevent and combat illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU) and resolve issues of fishermen and fishing vessels in good faith and humanely. He also hoped that President-elect Prabowo Subianto will support and increase exchanges of high-level delegations between the two countries’ leaders and share experiences between the National Assembly’s specialized committees.

Elevating Relations

The Indonesian President-elect emphasized that Indonesia always values its relationship with Vietnam, considers Vietnam a good friend and wishes to elevate relations with Vietnam. He agreed with the proposal of National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man and pledged to strengthen Indonesia-Vietnam relations.
