Indonesia Doubles Down on Hajj Safety with Increased Military Presence
Jakarta, Indonesia – In a move to bolster the safety and security of Indonesian Hajj pilgrims, the Ministry of Religious Affairs is considerably increasing the number of military personnel deployed to the annual pilgrimage.
Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs Muhammad Syafi’i met with Army Chief of Staff General Maruli Simanjuntak this week to solidify the plan, which aims to double the number of Indonesian National armed Forces (TNI) personnel serving as Hajj officers for the 2025 pilgrimage.
“by involving more TNI personnel with specialized skills in mitigating risks during the peak of Hajj in Arafat, muzdalifah, and Mina (the Armuzna area), pilgrims will be better protected,” Syafi’i stated.
Historically, fewer than 100 TNI personnel have been allocated for Hajj duties each year. this increase reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing the Hajj experience for Indonesia’s large Muslim population.
General simanjuntak expressed full support for the initiative, emphasizing the TNI’s readiness to contribute to a safer and more effective Hajj pilgrimage.
“Whatever the number of TNI personnel needed, we are fully prepared,” he said. “This is a crucial step in supporting a more effective hajj pilgrimage and reflects the government’s commitment, under the leadership of Prabowo Subianto, to enhancing protection for Hajj pilgrims.”
Indonesia, home to the world’s largest Muslim population, consistently receives the largest Hajj quota from Saudi Arabia. This year, the contry secured a record-breaking quota of 241,000 pilgrims.
