Indonesia’s Ministry of Religious Affairs is set to host the inaugural international Mubaqah Qiraatil Kutub (MQK) – a competition centered around the study of Kitab Kuning, classical Islamic texts written in Arabic – in Wajo, South Sulawesi, from October 1st. This event marks a significant step in promoting deeper understanding and engagement with traditional Islamic scholarship.
A Landmark Event: Expanding the MQK to the International Stage
This year’s MQK is particularly noteworthy as it expands beyond national participation to include students from across Southeast Asia. Participants will represent Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, brunei Darussalam, Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Timor-Leste, fostering a regional dialogue on Islamic learning. The competition’s internationalization underscores Indonesia’s growing role as a center for Islamic education and scholarship in the region.
According to Suyitno,Director General of Islamic Education at the Ministry, the event is designed to cultivate a more profound comprehension of core Islamic texts. “This competition is not about who reads Arabic the best, but who best understands the meaning of these classical texts,” he emphasized. This focus on understanding, rather than mere recitation, highlights a key objective of the MQK: to nurture critical thinking and insightful interpretation of Islamic thought.
Scale and Scope of the Competition
The competition anticipates a substantial turnout, with 8,773 students from 1,218 institutions expected to participate. This includes a significant representation from Islamic boarding schools (1,161) and Ma’had Aly (advanced Islamic higher education institutions – 57), demonstrating the broad engagement of Indonesia’s Islamic education network.
the event’s launch on Tuesday was officiated by Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar, and attended by ten Indonesian ambassadors to Southeast Asian countries, alongside the international participants. Heads of regional ministry offices, Islamic boarding school associations, and administrators from across Indonesia also joined the event virtually, signifying the nationwide support for this initiative.
The Importance of Kitab Kuning and Deeper Comprehension
The Kitab Kuning represent a rich tradition of Islamic scholarship, containing centuries of wisdom and legal rulings. These texts, traditionally studied in pesantren (Islamic boarding schools), form the foundation of Islamic jurisprudence and theology for many Indonesian Muslims.
Minister Umar articulated the MQK’s purpose as a platform for students to not only read but also interpret and explain the content of these texts, which have been passed down thru generations of scholars. He stressed the crucial distinction between fluency in Arabic and genuine comprehension. The ability to understand the nuances and context of these classical works is paramount, fostering a more informed and nuanced understanding of Islamic principles.
Adapting to a New Era: Online Accessibility
This year’s MQK is also distinguished by its online format,a strategic adaptation to logistical challenges and a commitment to broader accessibility. Conducting the competition online allows for greater participation and reflects the evolving landscape of education in the digital age. This move ensures that students from diverse locations can engage with the material and compete on a level playing field.
