Streamlining Shipping: SOE merger Aims to Lower ‌Costs and Boost Safety

jakarta, Indonesia – In a move aimed at improving efficiency and passenger safety, Indonesian Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Erick Thohir announced plans to merge state-owned shipping companies⁤ PT Pelni and PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry with state-owned port operator Pelindo.

Thohir emphasized that the merger will create a more streamlined system, ultimately benefiting both passengers and ⁤the Indonesian economy. “because it will push logistics costs to ⁤be lowered, (and) improve passenger safety,” Thohir explained. “Everything will be synchronized for the (shipping of) passengers and goods that sometimes were separated.”

This consolidation is expected to enhance port management, leading to smoother operations⁤ for both Pelni and PT ‍ASDP Indonesia Ferry. Pelindo will serve as ‌the holding company after the merger.

This move is part of Thohir’s broader strategy to restructure Indonesia’s ‌SOEs,aiming to reduce their number from the ‍current 41 to a more ⁤manageable 30. ⁤Since‌ taking office in 2019,‍ Thohir ⁣has been actively‍ consolidating SOEs, reducing their number from 142 to 107 in June 2020.earlier this year, Thohir announced plans to merge seven state construction companies into three⁣ larger firms. This restructuring aims to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of SOE performance.

Beyond consolidation, Thohir has outlined three key ⁣pillars for SOEs:

  1. Financial Health: SOEs must ‌be profitable, contributing to state revenue through taxes and dividends.
  2. Economic Growth: SOEs should play a vital role in driving Indonesia’s economic growth.
  3. People’s Economy: SOEs must support the growth of micro and ultra-micro businesses,as they currently distribute 92% of loans in this sector.

The merger of Pelni, PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry, and Pelindo is a significant step towards achieving these goals, promising a more efficient and passenger-centric shipping industry in Indonesia.
