Indonesia Mourns and Honors Fallen UN Peacekeepers in Lebanon

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has condemned the heinous acts that resulted in the deaths of three Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) personnel serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The remains of the fallen peacekeepers arrived at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on April 4, 2026, where the President attended the honors ceremony.

The three soldiers identified as deceased are Major Infantry (Posthumous) Zulmi Aditya Iskandar, Sergeant Major (Posthumous) M. Nur Ichwan, and Corporal First Class (Posthumous) Farizal Rhomadhon. In recognition of their service, the fallen soldiers received posthumous promotions and military honors. The Indonesian government has pledged support for the families of the deceased, including the provision of housing and aid.

Diplomatic Response and Investigations

Foreign Minister Sugiono stated that France, acting as the penholder for Lebanon at the United Nations Security Council, has approved Indonesia’s request to convene an emergency meeting regarding the deadly attack. Minister Sugiono also contacted UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on March 30, 2026, concerning the case.

State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi confirmed that the government has called for a swift, thorough, and transparent investigation into the deaths. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defense, and the TNI Commander coordinated efforts to repatriate the bodies and instructed troops remaining in the field to increase their vigilance.

President Prabowo further stated via Instagram that the state would ensure the sacrifices of these heroes are not forgotten and urged the nation to maintain unity and the spirit of safeguarding peace.

Casualties and Regional Context

The fatalities occurred amid escalating regional conflict in southern Lebanon. In addition to the three deaths, five other TNI personnel were injured during incidents on March 29 and 30, 2026. Private First Class Rico Pramudia sustained serious injuries, while First Lieutenant (Inf) Sulthan Wirdean Maulana, Private First Class Deni Rianto, Private First Class Bayu Prakoso, and Private First Class Arif Kurniawan suffered minor injuries.

Further casualties were reported on April 3, 2026, when three more Indonesian peacekeepers were injured following an explosion in El Addaiseh, located in southern Lebanon. UNIFIL has expressed concerns following the destruction of surveillance cameras by Israeli forces.

The deaths have been described by the Indonesian government as unacceptable casualties. The nation continues to mourn the loss of its personnel while upholding its commitment to global peacekeeping missions.
