global Philanthropy Trends: Direct Aid Dominates, Africa Leads in Generosity
New report reveals a world deeply invested in solidarity, with personal connections driving charitable giving.
A comprehensive global report on philanthropic activities in 2024 highlights a meaningful trend: the enduring power of direct aid. Nearly two-thirds of the world’s population, approximately 64 percent, engaged in monetary donations throughout the year. Of these contributions, a ample 40 percent flowed directly to individuals or families, underscoring a global reliance on personal solidarity. Charitable organizations received 36 percent of donations, while religious institutions and activities accounted for the remaining 24 percent.
“This data clearly illustrates that the global community continues to lean heavily on direct aid as a essential expression of solidarity,” noted Hamid, a key figure in analyzing these philanthropic trends. “While philanthropic institutions remain vital, the preference for direct support is a powerful indicator of how people connect with and respond to immediate needs.”
The report also sheds light on regional disparities in generosity. Globally, the average proportion of income donated stands at 1.04 percent. However, significant variations exist across continents. Africa emerges as the most generous continent, with citizens donating an average of 1.54 percent of their income. In contrast,Europe recorded the lowest figure, with an average donation of 0.64 percent of income.
Motivations Behind Giving: A Blend of Compassion and Conviction
The primary driver for charitable giving worldwide is a deep-seated concern for social issues and a desire to effect positive change, cited by 65 percent of respondents. This altruistic impulse is complemented by a strong sense of moral obligation, mentioned by 31 percent of donors. Religious reasons also play a significant role, with 29 percent of individuals donating due to their faith.Interestingly, the report found that religiously motivated donors tend to be more prolific, giving twice as much and supporting a broader range of social causes.
Volunteering: A Parallel Commitment to Community
beyond financial contributions, the spirit of giving extends to volunteerism. In 2024,approximately 26 percent of global respondents dedicated their time to volunteer activities. The average commitment was 9 hours per person. Similar to donation patterns, African citizens led in volunteer hours, contributing an average of 14 hours and 30 minutes. European citizens, conversely, reported the lowest average volunteer time at 6 hours and 30 minutes.
The findings from this report, compiled by PIRAC – an autonomous nonprofit institution dedicated to strengthening philanthropy and civil society - offer valuable insights into the evolving landscape of global generosity. PIRAC provides research, training, consultation, advocacy, and facilitation services, particularly focused on enhancing civil society organizations and cross-sector partnerships.
