Indonesia Receives Remains of Three UN Peacekeepers

Indonesia has received the remains of three United Nations peacekeepers who were killed in southern Lebanon. The soldiers were serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) during an Israeli invasion of the country, occurring within the context of an ongoing United States-Israel war on Iran.

The coffins of the fallen soldiers arrived in Indonesia on April 4, 2026. They were transported by uniformed officers during a ceremony attended by President Prabowo Subianto at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang.

Details of the Fatalities

The three peacekeepers were killed in separate incidents in southern Lebanon. Farizal Rhomadhon, 28, died after a projectile exploded. A UN security source told the AFP news agency that fire from an Israeli tank was responsible for that specific attack.

One day after the death of Rhomadhon, two additional Indonesian peacekeepers were killed. Zulmi Aditya Iskandar, 33 and Muhammad Nur Ichwan, 26, died after an explosion struck a UNIFIL logistics convoy in the region.

Diplomatic Response and Investigation

Following the arrival ceremony, Foreign Minister Sugiono stated that Indonesia is seeking a thorough investigation by the United Nations into the deaths. The minister emphasized that such incidents should not occur during a peacekeeping mission.

The Indonesian government has condemned the attacks and announced that the state will provide all necessary compensations for the fallen peacekeepers.

National Mourning and Public Reaction

The deaths of the soldiers have sparked significant public reaction within Indonesia. Thousands of people gathered to rally outside the United States Embassy in Jakarta to protest the deaths of the peacekeepers.

The fallen soldiers are being laid to rest with honors. One of the peacekeepers is scheduled to be buried with honors in Yogyakarta.
