President Prabowo Subianto announced a major milestone for Indonesian agriculture: the resumption of rice and corn exports after decades of relying on imports. This achievement, driven by triumphant government food security programs, marks a turning point for the nation’s self-sufficiency and economic stability.
Record Harvests and Surging National Reserves
speaking at the Annual Session of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR), President Subianto highlighted the tangible benefits of the government’s focus on agriculture. “For the first time in decades, Indonesia has resumed exporting rice and corn,” he declared, emphasizing the positive impact on farmers’ livelihoods. “I have seen it everywhere – our farmers are smiling because the price of unhusked rice remains stable, and their incomes have increased.”
The key to this success lies in a notable increase in rice production, resulting in national reserves exceeding 4 million tons – the highest level in Indonesian history. This surplus allows the nation to not only meet domestic demand but also contribute to global food security by exporting to friendly nations.
Strategic Investments in Food Security
President Subianto outlined the multi-pronged approach driving Indonesia’s agricultural conversion:
Expanding Agricultural Land: Recognizing the fundamental importance of domestic food production, the government is actively opening millions of hectares of new rice fields in key regions, including Central Kalimantan, West Kalimantan, Sumatra, and Papua. This expansion aims to reduce import dependence and ensure a stable food supply for future generations.
Empowering Rural Communities: The government is prioritizing the empowerment of rural communities through direct support and resources. This includes streamlining fertilizer distribution directly to farmers, ensuring they have access to essential inputs at affordable prices.
Modernizing Agricultural Practices: Providing agricultural equipment assistance is another crucial component of the strategy. By equipping farmers with modern tools and technology, the government aims to increase efficiency and productivity across the agricultural sector.
Fair pricing for Farmers: Recognizing the importance of incentivizing production, the government has raised the purchase price of unhusked rice to Rp6,500 per kilogram, ensuring that farmers receive fair compensation for their hard work and can earn meaningful profits.
Combating Food Fraud and Protecting Consumers
President Subianto also addressed the critical issue of food fraud, reiterating the government’s commitment to protecting Indonesian consumers. He emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards business actors engaging in manipulation, fraud, and other deceptive practices, such as selling regular-quality rice in premium packaging.
“To protect Indonesian consumers, the government I lead will remain vigilant against fraud, manipulation, stockpiling, and withholding of food distribution,” President Subianto stated firmly. “My management will always act firmly against those who break the rules.” This commitment to transparency and accountability is essential for maintaining public trust and ensuring a fair and stable food market.
A Vision for a Self-Sufficient Indonesia
The resumption of rice and corn exports represents a significant step towards President Subianto’s vision of a self-sufficient and prosperous Indonesia. By prioritizing food security, investing in agricultural growth, and protecting consumers, the government is laying the foundation for a more resilient and equitable future for all Indonesians. This achievement not only strengthens the nation’s economy but also enhances its standing as a responsible and reliable partner in the global community.
