Indonesia has set a target for national economic growth to reach 6% by 2027, while finance.detik.com reported that achieving the target requires investment to expand.

According to Harianjogja, the 2027 state budget draft sets the fiscal deficit at 2.4% of Gross Domestic Product, a reduction from the roughly 2.85% deficit projected for 2026. Wakil Menteri Keuangan Juda Agung stated in a media briefing reported by Harianjogja that the government intends to maintain fiscal prudence while actively supporting economic growth. Wakil Menteri Keuangan Juda Agung stated that excessive fiscal pressure could disrupt investor confidence as well as the government’s ability to obtain financing. One of the indicators of prudence emphasized by Juda is the budget deficit limit below 3% of Gross Domestic Product, with government debt maintained below 60% of GDP as stipulated in regulations. The 2.4% figure is also in line with the enacted 2027 state budget, with state revenues of Rp3.435,1 triliun and state expenditure of around Rp4.106,3 triliun.

This careful fiscal stance accompanies solid economic fundamentals recorded through September 2026. Kompas.id reported that Indonesia’s economy grew by 5.45% in the first semester of 2026, outpacing the growth registered during the same period in 2025 at 5.15%. Bank credit expanded by 13.65% year-on-year, while the manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index rebounded to 52.4 in September, returning to an expansionary phase. Indonesia’s trade surplus stood at $23.7 billion throughout January-July 2026, and the Consumer Confidence Index for August 2026 was recorded at 118.5, indicating a continued high level of optimism.

Green Transition and Digital Infrastructure as Growth Engines

The administration is banking on a twin-engine strategy of green economics and digital acceleration to fuel long-term expansion. Haryo Limanseto, spokesperson for the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, explained in a written statement cited by finance.detik.com that affordable clean energy and digital infrastructure will form the bedrock of a globally competitive investment climate. Downstream processing based on clean energy is projected to significantly increase added value, including the development of an electric vehicle ecosystem that has the potential to deliver up to 67 times added value with a global demand of US$5.91 trillion by 2045.

Energy demands are projected to reach 700 to 800 TWh by 2030, necessitating a total renewable generation capacity of 100 GW peak under President Prabowo Subianto’s directives. finance.detik.com noted that this transition relies on constructing 47.758 circuit-kilometers of transmission lines. Meanwhile, the village electrification program reached 1,505 locations in 2025 and is targeted to cover 4,390 locations in 2026, pushing the electrification ratio above 99% with the energy resilience index increasing to 7.13.

Private Sector Investment Helps Sustain Growth Amid Global Risks

Despite optimistic domestic targets, economic analysts caution that state spending alone cannot sustain a 6% growth rate. MetroTVNews.com reported that Chief Economist Fakhrul Fulvian of Trimegah Sekuritas Indonesia emphasized the necessity of active private sector participation to drive investment and maintain momentum against global uncertainties.

External vulnerabilities also loom large over domestic projections. The Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs noted in its official publication that global growth is projected at 2.8% for 2026 and 3.1% in 2027, according to OECD estimates. However, geopolitical friction, trade disputes, and potential energy price shocks continue to threaten exchange rate stability and capital flows.

To manage these risks, the Ministry of Finance maintains that domestic inflation remains well within the target range of 2.5% plus or minus 1%, registering 3.28% year-on-year in September 2026, following 3.19% in August 2026. Kompas.id reported that foreign exchange reserves stood at $146.5 billion, providing an adequate buffer against prolonged high global interest rates.

Government Smooths Budget Disbursement to Improve Fiscal Discipline

On the execution front, fiscal management has shifted toward a more uniform distribution of state spending throughout the fiscal year. MetroTVNews.com reported that the government has smoothed out budget disbursement to avoid the traditional year-end spending spikes, a structural adjustment designed to improve fiscal discipline and help markets better anticipate government project outlays. Meanwhile, the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs coordinates priority sectors and strategic initiatives for economic acceleration during the 2025-2029 period, alongside productivity enhancement programs focused on improving workforce quality and increasing financing access for productive and export-oriented sectors.
