Indonesia Aims for Food Self-Sufficiency by 2025
Jakarta - Indonesia is pushing for complete food self-sufficiency by 2025, a move aimed at strengthening national independence and fulfilling President Prabowo Subianto’s vision for the contry.
Head of the National Food Agency (Bapanas), Arief Prasetyo Adi, expressed optimism about achieving this aspiring goal. “Our spirit is self-sufficiency,” Adi stated. “The president has directed that domestic production be maximized. Thus, by 2025, we are optimistic that there will be no need for imports of staple foods like rice, sugar, or salt, except for special types like basmati rice.”
Adi highlighted the current sufficiency of several key commodities, including chicken meat, shallots, eggs, and chili peppers, demonstrating the progress already made towards self-reliance.
“these are all sufficient, meaning we do not need to import,” he emphasized. “Not all strategic food commodities require imports.”
To ensure the success of this initiative, Bapanas has tasked the State Logistics Agency (Bulog) wiht absorbing domestic production, aligning with President Subianto’s directive to support local farmers.
The Government Rice reserve (CBP) currently holds a healthy 1.7 million tons, providing reassurance about the national rice supply. “The president has stated that our stock this year is the best compared to previous years,” Adi affirmed. “Therefore, by 2025, we will stop importing rice. This is the president’s order, with the spirit of self-sufficiency. We really have to be able to be food autonomous.”
Beyond achieving self-sufficiency, Bapanas is also committed to maintaining price stability for both consumers and producers. This balance is crucial for boosting public purchasing power and controlling inflation.
