Jakarta, Indonesia – The Indonesian government is actively finalizing a series of strategic free trade agreements (FTAs) wiht key global partners, a move aimed at significantly reducing import tariffs and unlocking broader access to international export markets. This proactive approach is designed to bolster the competitiveness of Indonesian products on the world stage.
key Trade Initiatives Driving Economic Growth
Susiwijono Moegiarso, Secretary of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, highlighted these critical initiatives at the Bisnis Indonesia Mid-year Challenges 2025 event. He emphasized that the accomplished conclusion of agreements such as the Indonesia-European Union Thorough Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA) is pivotal in enhancing the global standing of Indonesian exports.
“High import tariffs can significantly burden production costs, thereby diminishing the competitiveness of Indonesian products in global markets,” Moegiarso stated. “To counter this, the government has been diligently working to finalize several strategic trade agreements.”
Landmark Agreements and Future prospects
among the recently finalized agreements is the Free Trade Agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), which was officially concluded on June 19, 2025. This agreement is expected to streamline trade flows and create new opportunities for Indonesian businesses within the EAEU bloc.
Moreover, following the recent conclusion of negotiations, the IEU-CEPA is now targeted to come into effect in 2026.This landmark agreement with the European Union is anticipated to be a game-changer, offering significant benefits for Indonesian exporters seeking to penetrate the lucrative EU market.
Indonesia has also been engaged in negotiations with the United states, aiming to secure a trade agreement that includes a reduction in import tariffs on Indonesian products entering the US market to a competitive 19 percent. This move is expected to provide a notable boost to Indonesian exports to one of the world’s largest economies.
Expanding Global Integration and Influence
Beyond bilateral and regional agreements, Indonesia’s commitment to global economic integration is further underscored by its recent accession as a member of BRICS on January 7, 2025. This membership positions Indonesia within a dynamic bloc of emerging economies, fostering collaboration and mutual growth.
In parallel, Indonesia is actively pursuing accession to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Progress (OECD) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). These pursuits signal Indonesia’s ambition to align with the highest international standards and participate more deeply in global trade frameworks.
“For the OECD, we are currently focused on implementing globally recognized standards to enhance our credibility and facilitate greater integration into the international economic community,” Moegiarso explained.
The government anticipates that these comprehensive trade strategies will not only strengthen Indonesia’s position within global supply chains but also ensure the lasting expansion of national products’ access to diverse international markets, ultimately driving robust economic growth and prosperity.
