Indonesia is preparing to offer medical assistance to Palestinian civilians affected by the ongoing conflict in Gaza, with Galang Island in the Riau ‌Islands province ⁣being considered as a primary location for treatment. The initiative, spearheaded⁢ by President prabowo Subianto, aims to provide‌ care for‌ up to⁢ 2,000 Gazans, focusing on the wounded, orphans, and those suffering‌ from trauma.

Galang Island: A History of Humanitarian Response

Galang Island is no stranger to providing refuge and medical care during times of crisis.‍ Previously serving as⁤ a camp for Vietnamese refugees, the island was repurposed in April⁤ 2020 ⁢to host an emergency COVID-19⁣ hospital. Its strategic location near Hang Nadim International⁢ Airport, coupled with reliable access to essential utilities⁣ like‍ electricity and water, made it an ideal location for⁢ rapid deployment of medical‍ facilities.

The ⁤existing complex, capable of accommodating 1,000 patients, is divided‍ into three distinct⁢ zones: dedicated staff accommodation, an isolation and observation area for‍ incoming patients, and a zone for follow-up ‌care and recovery. This design prioritizes effective isolation protocols, crucial for managing‌ potential outbreaks and ensuring the safety of both patients and medical personnel. State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi emphasized the importance of this ‍infrastructure, particularly in handling the influx of individuals possibly returning from ‍challenging circumstances.

Assessing‍ and Adapting Existing ⁤Infrastructure

While Galang Island possesses established healthcare infrastructure, the ‌government is currently conducting a thorough reassessment of its condition. Approximately⁣ two to three years have passed since the‍ facilities were last actively used as ⁢a COVID-19 hospital, necessitating a detailed evaluation of equipment functionality, building ⁢integrity, and overall readiness.

This assessment will focus on⁤ identifying any⁢ necesary renovations or upgrades required to effectively cater to ‌the specific medical needs of Gazan patients. Logistical considerations, including the supply chain for medications, medical⁣ supplies, and⁤ specialized equipment, are also being‍ carefully⁢ examined. The government is committed to ensuring the⁢ facility meets the ⁢highest ⁤standards of medical care.

A ⁣Humanitarian Mission, Not Relocation

Presidential Communications Office Head Hasan Nasbi has clarified that this initiative⁤ is ⁣strictly a humanitarian effort aimed at providing temporary medical care. ⁢ The‍ plan ‍does not ‍ involve⁤ the‌ permanent ⁤relocation ⁤of Gazan ⁤residents to Indonesia. ⁢ Once patients have⁤ received the necessary treatment and are ⁣deemed fit to⁣ return, they will be repatriated⁣ to ⁤Gaza.

The ‌Defense Ministry and the Foreign Affairs Ministry are collaborating to develop ⁢a comprehensive ⁢system‌ and procedure for delivering⁣ this medical⁣ aid, ensuring a smooth and efficient process⁣ from patient arrival to departure. Indonesia⁢ is also awaiting confirmation from Palestinian authorities regarding ⁢the evacuation of the frist batch⁣ of 1,000 residents, including those most vulnerable – the wounded, ‌orphans, and individuals experiencing severe trauma.

this ⁢commitment underscores ‌Indonesia’s longstanding ⁣support for the Palestinian ⁢people and⁣ its dedication to providing⁢ humanitarian assistance in⁢ times of need. The ‌government views this as‌ a moral imperative ⁢and a ‍crucial step in alleviating the suffering caused⁤ by the ongoing ‌conflict.
