YANGON, Myanmar – A powerful earthquake, registering magnitude 7.7, struck Myanmar on Friday, leaving a wake of devastation and a rising death toll. As of Saturday, officials reported that the number of fatalities had surpassed 1,000, with more bodies being recovered from the collapsed buildings.
The tremor, which also rattled neighboring Thailand, prompted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to confirm the safety of Indonesian citizens in both countries. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has coordinated with the Indonesian Embassy in Yangon and the Indonesian Embassy in Bangkok. Based on communication with the Indonesian community, until now there has been no data on the presence of Indonesian citizens, both in Myanmar and in Thailand who were injured or casualties,
said Judha Nugraha, Director of Protection of Indonesian Citizens and BHI Protection of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Saturday.
Nugraha stated that approximately 250 Indonesian citizens reside in myanmar, while 2,379 are in Thailand.
