YANGON, Myanmar – A powerful‌ earthquake, registering magnitude 7.7, struck Myanmar on Friday, leaving a wake of devastation and a rising ‍death toll. As of Saturday, officials reported ⁤that ‌the number of⁢ fatalities had surpassed 1,000, with more bodies being recovered from the collapsed⁢ buildings.

The tremor, ​which also rattled neighboring Thailand, prompted the Ministry of Foreign ​Affairs to confirm the safety⁢ of Indonesian⁢ citizens in both countries. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs⁣ has coordinated with the Indonesian ‌Embassy in Yangon and the Indonesian Embassy in Bangkok. Based on ⁤communication with the Indonesian community, until now there has⁣ been no data​ on the presence of Indonesian ⁣citizens, both in Myanmar and in Thailand who were injured or casualties, said Judha Nugraha, Director of Protection of Indonesian Citizens and BHI Protection of⁣ the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Saturday.

Nugraha stated that approximately 250 Indonesian⁤ citizens reside in myanmar, while 2,379 are in Thailand.

The indonesian Embassy in Yangon and the Indonesian Embassy in Bangkok appealed to Indonesian citizens to remain vigilant ⁣of aftershocks and immediately contact the Indonesian‌ Embassy⁤ in an emergency, Nugraha added.

The‍ earthquake,which occurred around 12:50 p.m. local time on Friday, had its epicenter in central Myanmar. In addition to the fatalities, at least‍ 1,670 people have been reported injured.

According to CNN, the ⁢increase in the death toll was reported by MRTV, the government announcer, and includes casualties from ​all affected areas.

The quake caused widespread damage across Myanmar.⁤ Neighboring Thailand also experienced significant damage,including the‍ collapse of a skyscraper under construction,resulting in at least seven deaths. Search and⁢ rescue operations are ongoing ‌in Thailand.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) initially estimated ⁢the potential for casualties to exceed 10,000, based on early modeling.
