Indonesian Independence Day Celebration Postponed in IKN
Jakarta too Host 80th Independence Day Ceremony Amidst IKN Facility Concerns
Jakarta, Indonesia – Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day celebrations will return to the nation’s current capital, Jakarta, rather than the new administrative capital in East Kalimantan, Nusantara (IKN). The decision, confirmed by government officials, stems from concerns over the readiness and adequacy of facilities in IKN,as well as a desire for efficiency.
IKN facilities Deemed Insufficient for National Event
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, highlighted the shortcomings of IKN’s infrastructure, stating, “Transportation, accommodation, and facilities are limited (in IKN).” he recalled the previous year’s Independence Day ceremony held in IKN, deeming the facilities inadequate for such a significant national event.”The government reflected on the 79th Independence Day ceremony in IKN last year, he said, deeming the facilities inadequate. Bahlil emphasized that facilities and infrastructure in the city must be thoroughly prepared before hosting state events.
Despite the shift back to Jakarta, bahlil urged the public not to overthink the location. “Don’t overthink it. The authority regarding the Independence Day ceremony belongs to the government,” he asserted, clarifying that President Prabowo’s decision should not be misconstrued as a reflection on his commitment to IKN’s development.”After all, this is President prabowo’s first year,” he added.
The decision was further corroborated by Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, who announced that the ceremony would not be held at IKN due to its ongoing construction.
Efficiency and Legal Considerations Drive Jakarta Decision
The government’s choice to centralize the Independence Day festivity in Jakarta has also garnered support from legislative bodies. Dede Yusuf, Deputy Chair of house Commission II, backed the decision, citing the government’s pursuit of efficiency.
“Considering the cost to travel thousands of people to IKN if the commemoration would take place there, Independence Day celebration in IKN ‘would not be efficient’,” Dede explained. He also pointed out the legal aspect, requesting the government to issue new regulations for the Jakarta-based celebration, as existing laws stipulate that the commemoration must be held in the capital city.
This move underscores the practical considerations and logistical challenges associated with holding large-scale national events in a developing new capital. While IKN continues its ambitious development, Jakarta remains the operational hub for significant national ceremonies.
