Jakarta, Indonesia – Former Indonesian Minister of Communications and Informatics Budi Arie Setiadi has been summoned by the National Police’s Corruption Eradication Corps (Kortas Tipikor) for questioning. The summons, issued on Thursday, December 19th, is reportedly linked to an ongoing inquiry into alleged abuse of authority in the handling of online gambling cases.Setiadi, who currently serves as minister of Cooperatives, previously held the Communications and Informatics portfolio under President Joko Widodo. While details surrounding the specific allegations against Setiadi remain unclear, the police are currently investigating a case involving 11 employees of the Ministry of Communications and Informatics (Kominfo) who are suspected of involvement in online gambling activities.
“It’s true,” confirmed Brigjen Arief Adiharsa, Deputy Head of Kortas Tipikor, when asked about Setiadi’s summons.
Setiadi was not present when the summons was issued. The police have yet to release a detailed statement outlining the nature of the corruption allegations against him.However, the ongoing investigation into the Kominfo employees suggests a potential connection to the alleged misuse of authority in relation to online gambling operations.On December 6th, Setiadi publicly stated his willingness to cooperate with the police investigation. “I’m focused on managing the cooperatives sector,” he said, “we support law enforcement and are serious about eradicating online gambling.”
Minister of Communications and Informatics Meutya Hafid has already suspended the 11 employees implicated in the online gambling case.They are currently in police custody.
Investigators have identified several suspects in the case and have seized billions of rupiah in assets. The investigation is ongoing.
