While the General elections Commission (KPU) is still finalizing the results, early reports indicate that KIM Plus candidates clinched over 50% of the races. Key victories include Dedi Mulyadi, a former House of Representatives member, who secured the governorship of West Java; incumbent East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa, who successfully defended her seat; and Ahmad Luthfi, former police chief, who will now lead Central Java.
Though, the ruling coalition faced a setback in the closely watched Jakarta gubernatorial race. Pramono Anung, a former cabinet secretary and member of the opposition Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), emerged victorious in the capital city.
The newly elected governors will be sworn in on February 7, 2025, with district heads and city mayors following suit on February 10. All officials will serve five-year terms.
Lucius Karus, a senior researcher at the Indonesian Parliament Watch, attributes KIM plus’s success to President Prabowo’s February election win, which provided the coalition with ample time to prepare for the regional polls.
“Prabowo’s victory gave KIM Plus a notable advantage,” Karus explained. “They had more time to consolidate their candidates and strategize for the campaign.”
Ija Suntana, a state administrative law professor at Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University Bandung, emphasized the importance of delivering on campaign promises.
“Voters expect tangible results,” Suntana stated. “However, administrative and political challenges could hinder the implementation of these promises.”
Suntana highlighted past instances where local administrators failed to address basic needs like jobs and social services, urging the newly elected officials to prioritize these issues.
The elections saw 18 parties vying for power, but the contest largely centered around KIM Plus and the PDI-P, Indonesia’s largest political party led by former president Megawati Soekarnoputri.
While the KPU awaits final tallies from Papua due to technical and security issues, Damianus Bilo, a deputy to the director of the State Defence Academy of the National Democrat Party, stressed the importance of focusing on district heads.
“District heads are closer to the people and play a crucial role in implementing development programs,” Bilo emphasized. “President Prabowo should prioritize building strong relationships with them.”
Indonesia’s regional autonomy laws grant provincial governors supervisory authority over district heads, who are ultimately accountable to their respective district parliaments. this decentralized system allows local administrators to tailor central government programs to their specific community needs.
