Indonesia‘s Defense Minister Stresses Sovereignty and Peace
Jakarta – Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin highlighted the importance of global powers respecting Indonesia’s sovereignty. He made this statement during a meeting with Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives.
“Indonesia respects global powers, and they should respect our independence and sovereignty,” he stated.
The minister called for Indonesia to reduce tensions in the global geopolitics, particularly between the United States and China. He pointed out that Indonesia maintains a non-bloc stance focused on peace and advocates for peaceful resolutions to international disputes.
“While we value peace, love for our homeland must be prioritized,” he added, reflecting on the founding fathers’ messages about national independence.
Sjamsoeddin mentioned that his ministry is preparing to face challenges to Indonesia’s sovereignty, including domestic issues like the insurgency in Papua. He noted, “We anticipate threats to our national strategy and economic development.”
Attendees of the meeting included key defense leaders, such as the Indonesian Defense Forces Commander and the Deputy Minister of Defense.
The meeting also covered the 100-day work program plan of the Defense Ministry and preparations for the 2024 Simultaneous Regional Elections.
