As the 110th running of the Indianapolis 500 approaches on May 24, 2026, the entry list has reached 31 confirmed participants. With the race traditionally featuring 33 starters, the central question for the sport is whether a 34th entry will emerge, potentially reviving the high-stakes drama of “Bump Day.”

The prospect of a 34th car introduces the possibility that one driver will be bumped from the field during qualifying. While some argue that the financial risk of fielding a car without a guaranteed spot is too high, others maintain that the tension of drivers scrambling for the final grid position is a quintessential part of the Indy 500 narrative.

Current Entry Landscape and Key Additions

The current field includes 25 full-time drivers, supplemented by six announced Indy 500 rides. These additions include Jack Harvey and Conor Daly driving for Dreyer & Reinbold Racing. Other notable entries include Ryan Hunter-Reay at Arrow McLaren, Helio Castroneves at Meyer Shank Racing, Takuma Sato at Rahal Letterman Lanigan, and Ed Carpenter at Ed Carpenter Racing.

The final composition of the grid depends on the allocation of remaining engine deals. You’ll see currently two Chevrolet engine deals and one Honda deal that have not been fully accounted for.

Potential Scenarios for the Final Spots

The most likely scenario for a 32nd or 33rd entry involves Abel Motorsports. Jacob Abel, who experienced being bumped from the race in 2025 while driving for Dale Coyne Racing, could potentially secure an entry if Chevrolet designates one of its remaining engines for the team.

A second Chevrolet engine remains available, though its destination is less certain. While McLaren is not expected to field a fifth car and Team Penske appears set with three, A.J. Foyt Racing is viewed as a likely candidate to add a third car to its stable.

Several drivers are currently seeking available seats, including:

  • Linus Lundqvist, the 2024 series rookie of the year, who lacks significant funding.
  • Devlin DeFrancesco, Katherine Legge, and Sage Karam, all of whom are exploring options.
  • Myles Rowe, who drives for Abel Motorsports in Indy NXT and is affiliated with Team Penske, though he is considered a longshot.

The final Honda engine is tentatively linked to a fourth Andretti Global car for Colton Herta. However, a scheduling conflict may arise if Formula 2 races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia are rescheduled for the Memorial Day weekend in Montreal. If Herta is unable to compete, that ride would become open.

The Path to 34 Entries

For the field to reach 34 cars, additional teams would need to step forward. Reports indicate that Chip Ganassi Racing has no interest in a fourth car, and Michael Shank does not believe he can expand to a four-car operation. This leaves Dale Coyne Racing as the only viable option to field a third car, provided a fully funded program is secured.

The Path to 34 Entries

Whether the grid remains at 33 or expands to 34 will depend on the willingness of Roger Penske and INDYCAR to coordinate with partners at Honda and Chevrolet to fill the remaining slots.

2026 Race Schedule

The month of May activities begin with the Sonsio Grand Prix on May 9. A full-field open test, including rookie orientation, is scheduled for April 28–29. Practice for the main event begins on May 12, with Time Trials taking place May 16–17. Carb Day and the Pit Stop Challenge will occur on May 22, leading into the race on May 24, which will be televised on Fox.
