PHOENIX, AZ – The NTT INDYCAR SERIES is deep into preparations for the March 1 season opener at St. Petersburg, and the final major on-track preparation is currently underway at Phoenix Raceway. The two-day Unser INDYCAR Open Test, which began today, , features all 25 drivers scheduled to compete in the 2026 season.

Teams are utilizing the 1.022-mile oval, returning to the series schedule for the first time since 2018, to fine-tune their setups ahead of both the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg and the Good Ranchers 250, scheduled for March 7 at Phoenix. Today’s session runs from 2-7 p.m. ET, with Wednesday’s schedule split into 11 a.m.-2 p.m. ET and 3:30-6:30 p.m. ET sessions.

The test isn’t just a technical exercise; it’s a crucial opportunity for drivers to re-acclimate to oval racing, a discipline that demands a unique skillset. The Phoenix oval presents a different challenge than the more common street circuits and road courses that dominate the INDYCAR calendar, requiring precise car control and strategic drafting. For many drivers, particularly those newer to the series or with limited oval experience, these two days are invaluable.

Fans in the Phoenix area have the opportunity to witness the action firsthand on Wednesday, , with free access to the sessions. An autograph session is planned for 2:45 p.m. ET (12:45 p.m. MT) for the first 300 fans visiting the Phoenix Raceway display in the Midway. This provides a rare chance for fans to interact with their favorite drivers and teams up close before the competitive season begins.

The return of Phoenix to the INDYCAR schedule is significant. The track holds a rich history within the series, and its inclusion adds a different dimension to the championship battle. The Good Ranchers 250 will be run as part of a doubleheader weekend with NASCAR, promising a large and enthusiastic crowd. The combination of open-wheel and stock car racing is expected to generate significant excitement and showcase the diversity of motorsports to a wider audience.

Beyond the on-track activity, teams are also leveraging the test to gather data and refine their strategies for the upcoming season. The Unser INDYCAR Open Test provides a controlled environment to experiment with different setups, tire compounds, and aerodynamic configurations. This data will be crucial in optimizing performance at both St. Petersburg and Phoenix, as well as throughout the rest of the 2026 season.

The Sebring International Raceway test, which concluded on February 10, served as an initial tune-up, focusing on road course setups. Ten teams and as many as 24 drivers participated in that test, utilizing the 1.67-mile road course to prepare for the season-opening Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. The bumps and varying surface types of Sebring closely mirror the challenges presented by temporary street circuits, making it an ideal testing ground.

The commitment from Chevrolet and Honda to the INDYCAR SERIES, recently extended in a historic multiyear agreement, underscores the stability and growing appeal of the series. This continued investment from the manufacturers is a testament to the competitive nature of INDYCAR and its potential for future growth. The technological advancements driven by these partnerships will undoubtedly benefit both the teams and the fans.

Romain Grosjean’s return to Dale Coyne Racing adds another compelling storyline to the 2026 season. Grosjean, known for his aggressive driving style and international racing background, brings a wealth of experience to the team. His presence is expected to elevate the performance of Dale Coyne Racing and add another layer of competition to the series.

Christian Rasmussen is also aiming to build on his oval success from previous seasons. His ability to adapt to the unique demands of oval racing will be a key factor in his performance throughout the 2026 season. The Phoenix test provides him with a valuable opportunity to refine his skills and prepare for the challenges ahead.

As the 2026 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season draws closer, the Unser INDYCAR Open Test at Phoenix Raceway represents a critical step in the preparations of all teams and drivers. The data gathered, the experience gained, and the fan engagement generated will all contribute to what promises to be an exciting and competitive season.
