Title: IndyCar Stars Aim for Rolex 24 Daytona Repeat
As the checkered flag waves at Daytona International Speedway on Sunday, Jan. 26, don’t be surprised to see an NTT INDYCAR SERIES regular standing atop the podium, claiming overall victory in the prestigious Rolex 24 At Daytona. It’s a trend that’s held strong since 2020.
Scott Dixon kicked off the streak in 2020 with Wayne Taylor Racing. His fellow IndyCar ace, Alexander Rossi, joined him in the winner’s circle the following year. In 2022 and 2023, it was Helio Castroneves‘ turn, first with Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) and then again last year, accompanied by Simon Pagenaud. Josef Newgarden started his 2024 charge with a Rolex 24 win.
This year, the No. 60 Acura MSR with Curb-Agajanian ARX-06 in the GTP class is the car to watch. Four drivers strong, it includes IndyCar veterans Dixon and Felix Rosenqvist, along with Tom Blomqvist and Colin Braun. Despite qualifying sixth, their practice run was the quickest by .176 of a second.
Alex Palou, the reigning and three-time NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion, also has a shot for victory in the No. 93 MSR Acura, alongside two-time Rolex 24 winner Renger van der Zande. It won’t be easy, though, with the No. 24 BMW Rahal Letterman Lanigan team securing the pole position.
Bryce Aron of HMD Motorsports, an active INDY NXT by Firestone driver, is another dark horse in the No. 85 Porsche 963 for JDC-Miller MotorSports. While LMP2 drivers like Colton Herta and Christian Rasmussen won’t contend for overall victory, they’re gunning for class honors.
The GT Daytona PRO and GT Daytona classes also boast IndyCar stars, including Kyle Kirkwood (No. 14 Lexus RC F GT3) and Scott McLaughlin (No. 91 Corvette Z06 GT3.R). And keep an eye out for the battle of the broadcasters: FOX INDYCAR analysts Townsend Bell and James Hinchcliffe compete against each other in GTD PRO.
