Expanded Helicopter Emergency Service Brings Critical Care to All of Portugal
Portugal’s ability to deliver rapid emergency medical care has substantially improved with the full operationalization of an expanded Emergency Medical Helicopter Service (SHEM). As of today, November 2, 2025, the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) confirms that Gulf Med has met all requirements to begin full contractual activity, establishing air coverage across the entire country.
Faster Response Times, Enhanced Care
This reinforcement of the SHEM is designed to dramatically increase the speed adn effectiveness of INEM’s air response capabilities. Faster access to medical assistance, regardless of time or location, is now a reality for citizens across Portugal. INEM emphasizes that this enhancement will be crucial in emergency situations where every minute counts.
New Helicopters Offer Specialized Transport Capabilities
The expansion includes the deployment of four “medium type” helicopters specifically equipped for medical emergency missions. A key feature of these aircraft is thier capacity to safely and stably transport incubators. This capability is vital for the transfer of newborns between hospitals, ensuring critically ill infants receive the specialized care they need without delay.
Dedicated Medical Teams Onboard
Each helicopter will be staffed with a complete medical team – a doctor and a nurse – alongside a dedicated team of pilots. This ensures that patients receive a high level of differentiated care *during* transport, not just upon arrival at a hospital. The presence of qualified medical personnel onboard allows for immediate intervention and stabilization of critical patients en route.
The new bases are strategically located in Loulé, Évora, Viseu, and Macedo de Cavaleiros, creating a network designed to provide extensive air medical coverage throughout Portugal. This investment represents a notable step forward in the country’s commitment to providing accessible and timely emergency healthcare for all.
