Mauritania‘s⁣ National Fire ⁣Fighting Campaign Achieves Satisfactory Results

The Minister of ⁢Environment and ⁣Sustainable Development, Masouda Bint Baham Ould Mohamed Laqdaf, reported that the pastoral areas affected by fires this season total 390 square kilometers.

This year’s campaign has shown‍ significant improvement in intervention speed and fire rates compared to last year, with a decrease ‌in affected areas from 500‍ square kilometers ‌to 390 ⁤square kilometers.

The campaign includes‌ the construction of 900 km of protective roads, with‌ a 55% implementation rate so far. Additionally, work has begun on maintaining over⁢ 700 km of roads, despite the‌ challenges faced. Contracts with civil society organizations⁤ are⁣ also being signed to build preventive roads by hand.

The campaign’s ⁣awareness, mobilization,⁣ and firefighting efforts continue,‍ allowing ‌for the‌ extinguishing of fires within a short period (less than 24 hours) thanks to the combined efforts of all⁣ parties involved, ⁤including the local population. This year’s campaign has also expanded to include the province of Tagant, in addition to⁣ the ⁣provinces of Kidimaga, Corkal, Brakna, and Otrarza, the two ⁢basins, and La Assaba.
