Influenza K: Christmas Survival Tips from Burioni
flu Circulation Rising in italy, Particularly Among School-Aged Children
Italy is experiencing a rise in influenza cases, with a particularly high incidence observed among children aged 5 to 14 years old. This increase is occurring alongside the continued circulation of COVID-19 and the H1N1 virus, creating a complex epidemiological situation.
Flu incidence and Transmission
According to virologist Roberto Burioni, the current outbreak is largely concentrated within schools. “Right now the greatest incidence of flu is between 5 and 14 years old,so it essentially circulates in schools,” Burioni stated. The close proximity of students – often 25 children in a classroom for extended periods – facilitates rapid transmission.
While school closures during the holiday season may temporarily slow the spread of the virus, Burioni notes that the overall trend is upward. He specifically highlighted Campania and Sardinia as regions experiencing particularly noticeable growth in cases, predicting that the increase will spread to othre regions across Italy.
Preventative Measures and Advice
Professor Burioni emphasized the importance of basic hygiene practices in preventing the spread of influenza. “One thing few people know about the flu is that it is easily spread by hand. We must do as our mothers told us,’wash your hands’,” he advised. Unlike COVID-19, which has a significant airborne component, the flu is primarily transmitted through contact with contaminated surfaces and direct physical contact.
Beyond handwashing, common sense precautions are recommended. Individuals experiencing flu-like symptoms should avoid social gatherings, particularly those involving vulnerable populations like the elderly. For those who must work while potentially ill, wearing a mask is suggested as a protective measure for others. This practice mirrors the protocols used by surgeons to prevent contamination during procedures.
