Lauren Weisberger, author of “The Devil Wears Prada,” brought a meaningful piece of her past to the red carpet for the sequel’s premiere in New York City. At the event held at Lincoln Center on Monday night, April 20, 2026, her daughter carried a Prada bag that had originally been gifted to Weisberger by Anna Wintour during her time as the Vogue editor’s assistant in the early 2000s.
Weisberger shared the significance of the accessory in an Instagram post following the premiere, writing: “Many moons ago Anna Wintour gifted me the very Prada bag that, tonight, my beautiful daughter carried down the red carpet. Life is weird and wonderful.” The bag is identified as the original iteration of the now-iconic Cleo design.
The author worked at Vogue for less than a year at the very beginning of 2000 before publishing her novel in 2003. That experience directly inspired “The Devil Wears Prada,” which was published in 2003 and adapted into the 2006 film starring Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, and Emily Blunt.
Although there were no reported interactions between Weisberger and Wintour at the event, both attended the premiere. Wintour was seen wearing a custom Prada striped dress from 2016, continuing her long-standing association with the fashion house.
The premiere marked a full-circle moment for Weisberger as the franchise returns with “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” scheduled for theatrical release on May 1, 2026. She attended the screening with her husband and two children, describing the experience as a nostalgic return to the world of Runway magazine that shaped her career and literary work.
