A group of hikers found themselves in a precarious situation on a Norwegian mountain yesterday, requiring the assistance of an air ambulance after being caught out by rapidly deteriorating weather conditions.
Caught in the Storm
The hikers, who were reportedly in good physical condition, were stranded approximately 300 meters from the summit of a 1452-meter-high mountain. Operations manager Tove Holst-Dyrnes stated at 18:40 that the group was unable to ascend or descend due to the steep terrain and the severe weather.
“Everyone is in good physical shape, but it is indeed probably exciting to be at the top to be surprised at this weather, so they are happy to be brought down,” said police officer Tore helgetun.
Sudden Downpour and Lightning
The situation was exacerbated by a sudden and intense storm that swept through the area. The owner of the nearby tourist cabin at Renndølsetra,Eystøl,described the change in weather as dramatic.
“It was sealed in an hour,so it went very fast,” Eystøl recounted. He further noted that the area experienced lightning and heavy rain after a period of clear weather.
Extreme Weather Conditions
The region of Møre og Romsdal had experienced temperatures exceeding 30 degrees celsius on Monday, creating a risk of both lightning strikes and forest fires. The sudden onset of the storm on the mountain likely caught the hikers unprepared, highlighting the unpredictable nature of mountain weather.
The air ambulance was on standby, ready to extract the remaining individuals once conditions allowed for a safe pickup. The prosperous rescue operation ensured that all hikers were brought down safely, despite the challenging circumstances.
