Amazon officially opened its massive 3.5-million-square-foot robotics fulfillment center in Loveland, Colorado, showcasing a facility that relies on more than 6,700 robots and over 1,100 employees to process millions of items weekly. According to reports from the Loveland Reporter-Herald and The Coloradoan, the sprawling facility located at 6425 Byrd Dr. spans the equivalent of 60 football fields and quietly began operations in July before holding a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sept. 4, 2026.

Scale and Logistics at the DEN9 Facility

Known internally as DEN9, the $400 million structure has been in development since 2021, according to reporting by the Loveland Reporter-Herald. Sam Bailey, Amazon’s senior manager for economic policy development, noted the facility’s immense footprint during the facility tour. When you bring a 3.5 million square foot building online, it’s a big conversation, and this community was prepared for that investment and the innovation, Bailey said, as cited by the Loveland Reporter-Herald. The site stores inventory until purchases occur, picking and packing customer orders before routing them to other distribution hubs. General Manager Eric Ng reported that roughly 3 million units entered the building last week, while about 1 million packages departed, a volume expected to more than double ahead of the holiday season.

Robotics Integration and Human Workforce

Operations inside the four-story building depend heavily on automation alongside human labor. The facility operates more than 6,700 robots, which includes over 200 low-slung Proteus autonomous mobile units designed to navigate the shipping floor using sensors while moving carts filled with packages. While visitors compared the autonomous units to household appliances, Ng explained that the Proteus robots feature illuminated eyes to signal awareness to nearby workers. It gives the assurance to associates who may not be used to walking around robots, that it knows where they are, Ng stated, according to the Loveland Reporter-Herald. Packages travel between systems along 30 miles of conveyor belts spanning the facility. To keep the automated systems functioning, DEN9 currently employs over 1,100 workers and continues active recruitment. According to General Manager Eric Ng, starting wages average about $23 per hour, with full benefits available to employees on their first day. Loveland Mayor Pat McFall praised the job creation during the ribbon-cutting event. Being able to get together with Amazon and bring 1,000 jobs to the city is just great, McFall said, as reported by the Loveland Reporter-Herald, adding that the project was secured without the city providing financial incentives.
