Streaming platforms and production studios are increasingly turning the 2014 murder-for-hire of Florida State law professor Dan Markel into serialized true-crime drama, according to regional reporting by the Tallahassee Democrat. The four-part documentary series titled “Welcome to the Family: The Murder of Dan Markel” premiered on Hulu on Sept. 1, 2026, bringing renewed public attention to an 11-year legal saga that resulted in five convictions, including that of the victim’s former mother-in-law, Donna Adelson.

Hulu True-Crime Series Explores Murky Family Motives

The four-part docuseries examines the complex web of relationships, bitter divorce proceedings, and custody battles that preceded the July 18, 2014, shooting in Tallahassee, Florida, as reported by the Tallahassee Democrat. Executive producer Dov Freedman noted in an interview with OnTheRedCarpet, as cited by ABC7, that the project explores how ordinary domestic conflicts escalated into an extraordinary murder-for-hire scheme. According to Hulu’s promotional materials and production interviews covered by ABC7, producer Lily Fletcher described Donna Adelson as a domineering mother who wanted 24-hour access to her grandchildren, a desire that was blocked by Dan Markel following his divorce from Wendi Adelson. The documentary features exclusive access and interviews with individuals at the center of the case who have never spoken publicly before, according to reporting by the Tallahassee Democrat. Among those interviewed are FBI agent Pat Sanford and the former girlfriend of Charlie Adelson, as detailed by ABC7. The series breaks down the investigation across four distinct episodes, tracking law enforcement’s steps from the initial crime scene investigation through the undercover sting operations that dismantled the conspiracy.

Appeals and Legal Status of Convicted Co-Conspirators

The release of the streaming series coincides with ongoing legal maneuvers from the defense. Donna Adelson, who is currently serving a life sentence behind bars, is asking an appeals court for a new trial, according to court documents cited by the Tallahassee Democrat. A legal brief filed on behalf of Adelson argues that she “was not the mastermind behind the murder of Dan Markel,” maintaining that she “never agreed to the murder plot and did not pay for the crime to be carried out.” Circuit Judge Stephen Everett of Tallahassee sentenced Donna Adelson to life in prison following her conviction in 2025 on charges of first-degree murder, conspiracy, and solicitation. She was the fifth person convicted in connection with the shooting death of the 41-year-old law professor. Other co-conspirators, including her son Charlie Adelson, received life sentences, while Luis Rivera received a 19-year sentence in exchange for his cooperation with the state, as reported by the Tallahassee Democrat.

Public Scrutiny Remains Focused on Uncharged Family Members

The conclusion of the Adelson trials has not quieted public interest in the case. Following Donna Adelson’s conviction, followers of the high-profile case flooded the State Attorney’s Office with emails questioning why Wendi Adelson has not faced criminal charges, according to the Tallahassee Democrat. Prosecutors have consistently declined to comment on her legal status. Wendi Adelson was questioned by law enforcement immediately following the 2014 shooting and later testified during subsequent trials under a grant of limited immunity, consistently denying any personal involvement in the murder. State prosecutors have previously designated her as an unindicted co-conspirator, maintaining in court that the Adelson family plotted to kill Markel so Wendi Adelson could relocate with their two sons to South Florida, a move that local courts had previously barred during their divorce proceedings.
