Insta360 is expanding the capabilities of its Ace Pro 2 action camera with a suite of new lenses, developed in collaboration with Leica. These aren’t simply filters or software adjustments; they’re physical lenses that magnetically attach to the camera, fundamentally altering its optical characteristics and opening up new creative possibilities. While action cameras are typically known for their wide-angle perspective, Insta360 is aiming to provide users with more control over their image, approaching the versatility of traditional interchangeable-lens cameras – albeit on a smaller scale.
The appeal lies in portability. As I discovered while testing the lenses at and around the CGMagazine offices, the Ace Pro 2 with these attachments remains significantly more compact and convenient than carrying a dedicated mirrorless or DSLR setup. This makes it an attractive option for content creators who prioritize travel and ease of use without sacrificing image quality or creative control.
Insta360 Cinematic Lens
The most visually striking of the new lenses is the Cinematic Lens. It introduces an anamorphic-style aesthetic, rendering footage in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio. This isn’t a simple crop; the lens subtly stretches the image, creating the characteristic wide-screen look often associated with cinematic productions. A blue coating inside the lens generates horizontal flares when light sources are present, further enhancing the filmic effect. The lens scored an 8.5/10 in my testing.
Installation is remarkably simple: twist off the standard lens cover at a 45-degree angle, align the new lens, and turn until it clicks into place. The camera doesn’t automatically detect the lens, requiring manual selection within the accessory settings. Each lens includes a protective rubber case for storage and transport. While the Cinematic Lens delivers a compelling look, it does come with some trade-offs. Low-light performance is reduced, and the PureVideo mode is unavailable. The lens flares, while visually appealing, can become distracting when light sources are positioned near the edges of the frame. Shooting in I-Log mode provides greater flexibility during post-production color grading.
Insta360 Close-Up Lens
For creators focused on detail-oriented work, the Close-Up Lens is a game-changer. Action cameras typically struggle with close-range focusing, resulting in soft or blurry images when attempting to capture subjects at arm’s length. This lens addresses that limitation directly, offering an adjustable focal range from 10 to 75 centimetres. A simple turn of the focus ring switches between modes optimized for vlogging and true macro photography. This lens received a score of 9/10.
The difference is immediately noticeable. When shooting at a typical vlogging distance of around 18 inches, faces are rendered with impressive sharpness. Focus peaking on the flip screen aids in achieving precise focus in real-time. Importantly, the lens maintains the camera’s field of view and doesn’t introduce significant colour shifts or distortion. The build quality is robust, and the included rubber case provides adequate protection. This lens is particularly valuable for anyone creating tutorial videos, product reviews, or any content requiring close-up detail.
Insta360 Ultra Wide Lens
The Ultra Wide Lens offers a massive 189-degree field of view, significantly expanding the camera’s perspective. While the Ace Pro 2 already features a wide 157-degree lens, this accessory takes it to another level. It’s particularly well-suited for capturing immersive footage in tight spaces or expansive landscapes. However, it’s also the least essential of the three lenses, earning a score of 7/10.
The expanded field of view delivers a unique and engaging perspective, but the extreme curvature at the edges of the frame takes some getting used to. It’s ideal for specific applications, such as motorcycle riding or outdoor adventures, where capturing a wider view of the surroundings is crucial. The lens attaches easily, and the build quality is consistent with the other accessories. While it doesn’t dramatically transform the Ace Pro 2’s capabilities for all users, it provides a valuable option for those seeking an ultra-wide perspective.
the new lens system for the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 represents a significant step forward for action camera versatility. While it won’t replace a dedicated camera system, it offers a compelling alternative for creators who prioritize portability and convenience. The lenses expand the camera’s creative potential, allowing users to capture a wider range of shots and styles. The lightweight nature of the complete setup makes it easy to carry and simple to pack, even when space and weight are limited. The lenses are a welcome addition to the Ace Pro 2, and I’m eager to see how Insta360 continues to refine and expand its lens ecosystem in the future.
