Instagram will end support for end-to-end encryption in direct messages on May 8, 2026, marking a significant reversal in the platform’s privacy protections. The change means Meta will be able to access the content of private conversations stored on its systems, a shift that contrasts with the broader industry trend of expanding encryption.
The update was confirmed in Instagram’s Help Center documentation, which states that “End-to-end encrypted messaging on Instagram will no longer be supported after May 8, 2026.” Users with affected chats will receive in-app prompts explaining how to download their messages and media before the change takes effect. The platform advised that some users may need to update the app first to access the data export feature.
Instagram previously offered end-to-end encryption as an optional feature for direct messages, focused on private conversations. The company has not explained why it is removing the feature or whether it will replace it with another form of encryption. Without end-to-end encryption, Meta could analyze private message content for purposes such as advertising, content moderation, or other internal uses.
The decision stands out because many messaging platforms are strengthening encryption protections rather than reducing them. WhatsApp, also owned by Meta, continues to offer end-to-end encryption by default for all personal messages and calls. Signal and Apple’s iMessage similarly maintain strong encryption as a core privacy feature.
Privacy advocates have raised concerns that the change could enable greater surveillance of user communications and reduce trust in the platform. The move may also complicate efforts to comply with strict data protection regulations in regions like the European Union, where user consent and data minimization are key requirements under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Users are encouraged to export any conversations or media they wish to keep before May 8, 2026. After that date, Instagram will no longer support end-to-end encrypted messaging and existing encrypted chats will be converted to a less secure format unless manually saved by the user.
