Catania Man Charged in Car Insurance Scam
MONTODINE, Italy (AP) — A 29-year-old man from the province of Catania, already known to police, has been charged with fraud by the Carabinieri of Montodine. The charges stem from an online car insurance scam that defrauded a local resident.
The Complaint and Inquiry
According to police reports, the victim, seeking to renew his car insurance, searched online for the best rates. He entered his personal and vehicle facts on a website and was afterward contacted via a messaging submission. The individual presented a quote that appeared legitimate, even referencing a well-known insurance company.
“Because of this very reason,” explained Colonel Girardi, “he trusted the offer and agreed to pay nearly 400 euros.” The victim sent copies of his documents and vehicle information and then transferred the agreed-upon amount to the provided bank account, expecting to receive his insurance policy.
However, the policy never arrived. The victim then discovered that the insurance agency he had been in contact with did not exist at the address provided in their email correspondence. The address belonged to a different, uninvolved insurance agency.
Realizing he had been scammed, the victim filed a complaint with the Carabinieri.Investigators traced the bank account used in the fraud, identifying the 29-year-old Catania resident, who now faces charges.
