Significant changes to Intel’s executive team were announced on February 5, 2024, including the appointment of Jim Johnson as head of the Client computing Group and the departure of Michelle Johnston Holthaus.
New Leadership Appointments
On February 5,2024,Intel announced a series of leadership changes designed to streamline operations and accelerate growth in key areas. Jim Johnson, a 40-year Intel veteran, was officially named Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Client Computing Group (CCG), a role he previously held in an interim capacity (Intel Newsroom, February 5, 2024). He will oversee the PC and edge ecosystems.
Johnson’s extensive experience at Intel includes previous roles within the Technology and Manufacturing Group and the Networking and Communications Group, providing him with a broad understanding of the company’s operations. This appointment formalizes his leadership following Michelle Johnston Holthaus’s transition to other senior roles within the company.
Kevork Kechichian joins Intel as Executive Vice President and general Manager of the Data Center Group (DCG), bringing with him expertise from Arm, where he served as Executive Vice President of Engineering (Intel Newsroom, February 5, 2024). The DCG is crucial to Intel’s ambitions in the server market and high-performance computing.
Additionally, Naga Chandrasekaran, currently Executive Vice President and Chief Technology and Operations Officer of Intel Foundry, will expand his responsibilities to include Foundry Services. This consolidation aims to strengthen Intel’s position as a leading provider of foundry services, competing with companies like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).
Departure of Michelle Johnston Holthaus
The proclamation also confirmed the departure of Michelle Johnston Holthaus, former co-chief executive and head of Intel Products. While Intel did not specify the reasons for her departure, the move is part of a broader restructuring under CEO pat Gelsinger (Reuters, February 5, 2024). Holthaus had been a key figure in Intel’s product growth and strategy.
Strategic Implications and Context
These leadership changes reflect Intel’s ongoing efforts to regain market share and innovate in key areas. CEO Pat Gelsinger, who took the helm in February 2021, has been implementing a strategy known as “IDM 2.0,” which aims to restore Intel’s process technology leadership, expand its manufacturing capacity, and enter the foundry business (Intel Newsroom, February 23, 2021).
The appointment of Jim Johnson provides stability and continuity to the Client Computing Group, while the addition of Kevork Kechichian brings valuable expertise from Arm to the Data Center Group. Expanding Naga Chandrasekaran’s role underscores Intel’s commitment to becoming a major player in the foundry market.
